Black Powder Cannon

Firing It

If you are going to fire your black powder cannon, you will only want to use the proper amount of black powder or any proper black powder substitute. Never use smokeless powder of any kind in your black powder cannon. For a bore size of 1 inch, use 150 grains maximum. For a ½ inch bore, use 60 grains maximum.  The only thing to put on top of the powder charge would be a small amount of aluminum foil tamped down lightly.

Aluminum foil will help keep you from starting any fires from smoldering packing. Paper of any kind can smolder for a long time. It will also make a mess out of your yard. I have found that aluminum foil is about the easiest wading to use. Just tamp it down lightly, and you will get the blast that you are looking for.

By using only aluminum foil for you’re wading and projectile, you are keeping your barrel pressure low when firing your cannon. If you put anything in your barrel that has some weight to it, you will increase the amount of pressure within the barrel that is generated when the powder charge is set off. A very safe nose maker can turn it to a bomb if loaded wrong.

Another reason to never put any type of projectile in your barrel is that even a smaller sized cannon barrel will be able to fire a projectile for a very long distance.  If the fired projectile goes down range and does any damage to anyone or property, you are liable.  Another reason not to fire any projectiles is that it will make a lot of recoil and possibly throw your cannon back.
